About the Photographer

Jonathan van Beek is a New Zealander living in Melbourne, Australia. He moved to Australia in 2002 and first picked up a camera in 2004 during a trip overseas. Since then he has worked with 35mm Film and Digital cameras and also with Medium Format cameras.

His main source of inspiration is landscape photography, having come from a country made famous by it's pristine landscape, however Jonathan is currently experimenting heavily with fashion and Portrait photography- lending his trademark photographic style to this genre by introducing the same brooding, dark imagery and muted tones that underline much of his landscape work.

That being said, Jonathan is a keen student of all photography types and experientation is a key part of his work as a photographer. Expect to see more bodies of work, of various genres, being added to this website as he undertakes the various projects he has assigned himself.

Welcome.

Photography is a passionate pursuit for me, a chance to unwind and an excuse to explore this world. It is a chance to document a world in flux, to share moments and capture memories.

It was a chance business trip overseas that got me hooked, where a borrowed Nikon F65 got me my first real taste of photography. The thrill of getting back my first pack of photos showing pristine tropical beaches and rugged coastlines, just as I had remembered seeing it in real life set me on my journey into the art of photography.

Nowadays I use Canon Digital SLR's and Mamiya 645 Medium Format cameras in my work. Ironically, years before hand my art teacher at High school denied me the opportunity to study B&W photography, doubting my artistic ability- thankfully I'm too stubborn to listen to teachers and am always looking for new themes and areas of photography in which to work in. I am very much on a journey with my works and I see them progress from strength to strength as time goes by. I hope that you take the time to look through my galleries and also take the time to come back from time to time as I document my journey.....

As I enojy what I do so much I don't stick to one particular genre at present- If anyone has any projects they would like my involvement in, be it landscape, fashion or commerical work please let me know. For the right project I will more than happy to get stuck in.
